What is Acupuncture?

National Acupuncture Day

In October we have really focused a lot on all the amazing things that chiropractors and physical therapists do, from helping us heal, to being a support system, and it makes sense why these two professions have their own month. The history and impact of these two conservative care options really played a big part in how our healthcare system was diversified and expanded. However there is one day in October that is also very important to us: October 24th, which is National Acupuncture Day! We are lucky enough to be celebrating and offering all three services; chiropractic, acupuncture, and physical therapy.

What is acupuncture?

It seemed only fitting to discuss more about acupuncture and how it has helped so many people throughout the centuries. Originating in Ancient China, acupuncture is the insertion of tiny needles along specific points on the body to help regulate the system. If you're not a fan of needles, no sweat, these needles are smaller than a blade of hair. Ancient Chinese used acupuncture to help with injuries, cure colds and flues, relieve headaches and cramps, and even treat different diseases. This ancient practice is still being used today- which is a testament to how well this conservative treatment works.

The ancient Chinese believed in Qi (pronounced Chi) which is a life energy that flows freely through the body. When it is blocked, illnesses and malfunctions can occur. Now with centuries to learn and expand on the practice of acupuncture, we have learned that Qi is similar to the energy flow of the nervous system and circulatory system delivering oxygen, hormones, and other vital nutrients throughout the body. When our bodies are running healthily, this energy and blood flow is most efficient.
