Physical Therapy Ultrasounds in Buffalo

Musculoskeletal injuries treatment by physical therapy ultrasound

Despite having the same name, this type of ultrasound is not the same as the one given to those who are pregnant. The ultrasound that our physical therapists utilize is a deep heating treatment for conditions like sprains, strains, tendonitis, and other musculoskeletal conditions. During a PT ultrasound, a wand is pressed gently against your skin near the site of the injury, and it moves in a small circular motion to help the ultrasound waves penetrate deep into the tissues that need it.

What Happens During an Ultrasound?

The way we use the ultrasound varies for each patient depending on their individual condition. If ultrasound is implemented to help treat your condition or injury, the doctors at BC + PT will walk you through the ins and outs of the procedure and what you can expect from the treatment.

Comfortable clothing is recommended to allow easier access for the physical therapist, who will apply a hypoallergenic gel on your skin to make the ultrasound wand glide easier, and conduct the waves into the tissues.

What Can You Expect After an Ultrasound Therapy Session?

Therapeutic ultrasound is generally a comfortable, noninvasive treatment. After ultrasound therapy, some patients may notice that the treated area feels looser or more comfortable. However, ultrasound is often just one part of that day’s physical therapy appointment. Your therapist may follow treatment with stretching, mobility work, strengthening exercises, or other techniques designed to improve movement and function.

Depending on your condition, ultrasound may be recommended across multiple visits rather than as a one-time treatment. Your physical therapist will monitor changes in pain, range of motion, strength, and overall function to determine whether ultrasound should continue to be included in your care plan. Because progress depends on what happens between appointments, following prescribed exercises and other rehabilitation instructions can help reinforce the improvements made during therapy and support a more complete recovery.

What Are the Benefits of Physical Therapy Ultrasounds?

Ultrasound benefits include:

  • Reduction of pain
  • Relaxing the tension in muscle tissues
  • Increased blood flow
  • Breakdown of scar tissue
  • Deeper heat application compared to a heat pack

Ultrasounds are a great way to help with injuries from car crashes, work accidents, dislocations, sprains, or jerking movements. Your physical therapist or chiropractor is here to help guide you through any questions you may have, as well as walk you through this treatment process.

What Conditions Can Physical Therapy Ultrasound Help Treat?

Physical therapy ultrasound may be used for a variety of musculoskeletal and soft tissue conditions. It is sometimes incorporated into treatment plans for muscle strains, ligament sprains, tendonitis, and other tendon-related problems. Patients recovering from soft tissue injuries or scar tissue following an injury may also benefit when ultrasound is clinically appropriate.

Ultrasound may also be considered for patients experiencing joint stiffness or restricted mobility. In these situations, the treatment may help prepare surrounding tissues for stretching, mobilization, or active rehabilitation.

Patients recovering from auto accidents or workplace injuries may also receive therapeutic ultrasound as part of a broader rehabilitation program, particularly when soft tissue irritation, stiffness, or reduced mobility is affecting recovery.

Ultrasound is not appropriate for every injury or every patient. A physical therapist should first evaluate your condition and determine whether this treatment fits your needs. Factors such as the location of the injury, severity of symptoms, tissue involved, and stage of healing can all influence whether ultrasound is recommended.

How Does Ultrasound Fit into a Physical Therapy Treatment Plan?

Therapeutic ultrasound is typically used as one component of a larger physical therapy program rather than as a standalone solution. Depending on your needs, it may be combined with stretching, flexibility exercises, strength training, joint mobilization, or other active and passive treatments. Passive therapies can help prepare the body for more active rehabilitation by addressing discomfort or mobility restrictions. From there, exercises and movement-based treatments can focus on rebuilding strength, improving flexibility, and restoring normal function.

The ultimate goal of physical therapy is not simply temporary symptom relief. Treatment should help you move better, allowing you to perform everyday activities more comfortably, and return to your routines. For this reason, every rehabilitation plan should be individualized according to your diagnosis and recovery goals.

Our Patients Say It Best

Our Patient Reviews

“ I have been a patient at Buffalo Chiropratic and Physical Therapy for about a year now, working on strengthening my knee for replacement surgery while waiting for another medical issue to resolve. During the year the business changed hands and, happily, the transition from the old to the new has been very smooth. Dr. Connor oversees my aqua therapy and physical therapy. He is extremely knowledgeable, both professional and personable and focused. Yet he is very easy to interact with. He has a good sense of humor which he uses frequently because he can be a tough taskmaster when asking you to stretch to your limits to encourage healing. However he never pushes a you to the point of pain, and encourages a gentle, easy start for any new exercise. When explaining a new exercise he is very clear and precise in his directions, explaining the mechanics as well as the reasoning behind it. Dr. Connor is an outstanding therapist whom I can wholeheartedly recommend. May 02, 2025 ”
