Learn About the Benefits of Stretching the Spine

Spinal decompression therapy (non-surgical) is the process of gently stretching the spine that has proven to be quite effective. The therapy utilizes the idea of “traction” that many chiropractors, osteopaths, and other health professionals have relied on for decades. Traction and decompression both work to relieve pain and create a better healing environment. A study published by Parker College of Chiropractic showed that 86% of ruptured disc patients showed good or excellent results using decompression therapy.

Many patients turn to pain medication or are prescribed highly-addictive opioids when they feel spinal pressure- however, these medications have little to no effect in relieving disc pressure itself and provide no long-term healing or relief. Non-surgical spinal decompression treatment is a simple method that may eliminate the source of spinal disc pain without the use of medication or surgery, and provides both relief and long-term healing.

Spinal decompression therapy can also be used to treat the following conditions:

  • Bulging or herniated disc (sometimes known as disk injury)
  • Degenerative disk disorders (DDD)
  • Sciatica (leg pain or pinched nerve)
  • Spinal neuropathy or spinal nerve pain
  • Posterior facet syndrome (worn spinal joints)
  • Spinal nerve root injuries or nerve pain
  • Facet arthropathy

Spinal decompression therapy works by stretching and relaxing the spine in a controlled manner. This creates a negative intradiscal pressure, which pulls the herniated disc into the proper space encouraging healing nutrients, like water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids to flood to the area and assist with healing.

A typical spinal decompression therapy session involves the following steps:

  • Placing a harness around the hips and attaching it to the bottom of the table near the feet
  • Keeping the upper part of the table still while the bottom part slides back and forth to create the traction effect

Each patient will require a different number of treatments depending on the severity of their condition or injuries.
