Why Summer Athletes Are at Risk

Summer is the perfect season for getting active—whether it’s running, biking, swimming, or joining a local sports league. But with increased activity comes a higher risk of injuries like strains, sprains, and overuse issues. The combination of heat, outdoor surfaces, and increased intensity means it’s especially important to take steps to protect your body.

Warm Up and Cool Down Matter

Never skip your warm-up! Gentle stretching and light aerobic activity prepare your muscles and joints for action, increasing circulation and flexibility. Likewise, cooling down after activity helps your heart rate return to normal and reduces muscle soreness. Make dynamic stretches part of your routine before you play, and finish with static stretches to help prevent tightness.

Stay Hydrated and Listen to Your Body

Dehydration can lead to muscle cramps and fatigue, making you more prone to injuries. Drink water before, during, and after your activities, especially in the summer heat. Pay attention to signs of fatigue or pain—pushing through discomfort can turn a minor issue into a bigger problem.

Use Proper Gear and Technique

Wearing the right footwear and protective equipment for your sport can make a big difference. Make sure your shoes fit well and are appropriate for your chosen activity. If you’re learning a new sport or skill, take the time to learn proper technique to avoid unnecessary strain on your muscles and joints.

Cross-Train and Rest

Mix up your workouts to avoid overuse injuries. Alternate between activities like swimming, cycling, and running to give different muscle groups a break. Don’t forget to schedule rest days—your body needs time to recover and rebuild.
