What to Expect From Your First Visit with a Physical Therapist

What is the role of a physical therapist?

Physical therapy is centered around evaluating and recording your progress in healing injuries. Your BC + PT physical therapist is there to help guide you through exercises for you to do both in your appointments and at home, as well as apply other techniques that you can find only at your appointments, such as heat or ice therapy, ultrasound , e-stim , or even mechanical traction .

Before Your First Appointment

Physical therapy in New York State requires all patients to have a prescription to receive treatment. After you have received a script from your primary care provider or medical specialist, you can then schedule your first appointment with us! The physical therapists at BC + PT can treat both No Fault and Workers Comp injuries, as well as accept most insurances.

Medical History / Exam

Now that you have your script and scheduled your first appointment, it’s time to get ready! To start off every first appointment, you and your doctor will privately discuss your medical history and your symptoms. The physical therapist will ask how your injury affects you and any lifestyle habits due to your pain or injury.

The BC + PT website offers our new patient form that you can download ahead of time as well! We strive to make sure that our patients feel as comfortable as possible, and for some that means completing your paperwork at home rather than in the office.

After you have discussed your medical history and what brought you into meeting your amazing physical therapist, they will move on to the physical exam. During the physical exam, testing muscle strength, range of motion, or checking reflexes are some examples of what to expect.

Physical Therapy Treatment

The treatment your physical therapist will use depends on what type of problem you are having. They will utilize methods such as mechanical traction , ultrasound , e-stim , or even myofascial technique. Physical therapy is a process, and the doctor will set you up on a treatment plan with regular reevaluations to check on your progress. There isn’t a set time frame as to how frequently you will need to see your physical therapist. However, following the treatment plan designed for you, as well as being honest with them on how you are feeling, is the best way to make sure that you are on track to accomplish your goals with physical therapy.

Our Patients Say It Best

Our Patient Reviews

“ I have been a patient at Buffalo Chiropratic and Physical Therapy for about a year now, working on strengthening my knee for replacement surgery while waiting for another medical issue to resolve. During the year the business changed hands and, happily, the transition from the old to the new has been very smooth. Dr. Connor oversees my aqua therapy and physical therapy. He is extremely knowledgeable, both professional and personable and focused. Yet he is very easy to interact with. He has a good sense of humor which he uses frequently because he can be a tough taskmaster when asking you to stretch to your limits to encourage healing. However he never pushes a you to the point of pain, and encourages a gentle, easy start for any new exercise. When explaining a new exercise he is very clear and precise in his directions, explaining the mechanics as well as the reasoning behind it. Dr. Connor is an outstanding therapist whom I can wholeheartedly recommend. May 02, 2025 ”

Common Sports Injuries We Treat in Buffalo

At Buffalo Chiropractic + Physical Therapy, we work with athletes of all levels who are dealing with pain, mobility loss, or setbacks from sports-related injuries. Our clinic is a trusted destination for sports physical therapy in Buffalo, NY, combining hands-on care with evidence-based rehab strategies. Through integrated chiropractic and physical therapy, our services are designed to support healing that will help you restore movement and return to activity with confidence. Common sports injuries we treat include:

  • Soft Tissue Injuries (Sprains & Strains): Sprains involve stretched or torn ligaments that stabilize joints, while strains affect muscles or tendons responsible for movement. Both can cause pain or swelling, and sustained instability if not treated correctly. Physical therapy helps accelerate the natural remodeling process of these tissues through manual therapy in combination with controlled loading and progressive exercise, allowing fibers to heal stronger and more resilient.
  • ACL & Knee Rehabilitation: Fast-action sports that involve pivoting and sudden stops, make knee injuries especially common. We provide structured rehabilitation for ACL tears and other ligament injuries, whether you’re recovering post-surgery or participating in “pre-hab” to improve strength and mechanics before a procedure. Our protocols focus on restoring stability and strength in the knee.
  • Overuse Injuries: Repetitive motion can lead to conditions like tendonitis and runner’s knee, as well as stress fractures. These injuries often develop gradually and worsen without intervention. We address the root causes (such as poor biomechanics, muscle imbalances or training errors) to reduce pain and prevent recurrence.
  • Shoulder & Rotator Cuff Injuries: Overhead athletes in sports like baseball or swimming place high demands on the shoulder. We treat rotator cuff strains, labral issues and shoulder instability with targeted mobility work and strengthening to protect the joint during high-velocity or repetitive movements.
  • Concussion Management: Sports-related concussions require careful, progressive care. Vestibular physical therapy can play a key role by addressing dizziness and balance deficits, helping athletes safely progress through recovery.

Our Goal-Oriented Approach to Athletic Performance & Recovery

Our approach to sports injury treatment is centered on clear goals: reducing pain and restoring function to help you return to your sport stronger than before. Every plan begins with restoring range of motion (ROM). After an acute injury, joints and surrounding tissues often become stiff or guarded. Through manual therapy and guided stretching, we help maintain mobility and reduce scar tissue buildup, creating a proper foundation for safe strengthening.

From there, we emphasize sport-specific strengthening. Rather than generic exercises, your program is designed around the demands of your activity. We’ll help football players develop explosive power and golfers restore rotational strength, meanwhile marathon runners can focus on enhancing endurance and efficiency. Your body will be prepared for real-world performance, not just the clinic. Neuromuscular re-education is another critical component to that. Injuries can disrupt communication between the brain and body, affecting balance and coordination. Targeted drills with our professionals can retrain these systems, improving agility and movement control under dynamic conditions. We also prioritize injury prevention education through structured “Return to Play” testing. Using objective data, we determine when an athlete is truly ready to resume sport with a lower risk of re-injury.

Recovery doesn’t stop when you leave our doors. Personalized home exercise programs (HEPs) reinforce progress with custom movements you can perform outside the clinic, supporting consistent improvement. This comprehensive philosophy is what sets our sports PT in Buffalo, NY apart and helps athletes move forward with confidence.
