Therapeutic Ultrasounds- Healing through Physical Therapy

Therapeutic Ultrasound- Healing through Physical Therapy

Ultrasound is an effective imaging technique with numerous applications in medical procedures, including pregnancy.  But, this isn't the only type of ultrasound out there. At Buffalo Chiropractic + Physical Therapy, we utilize a technique called therapeutic ultrasound. Our doctors use this to treat different musculoskeletal issues you might have, including muscle spasms, tissue injury, and pain.

How Does Therapeutic Ultrasound Work?

Therapeutic ultrasound uses a machine to send an electric current via crystals in the ultrasound wand. The wand is pressed gently against the skin, and vibrates, creating waves that travel through the skin to the underneath tissue. These waves transfer energy to the targeted tissues to have the desired effects. The doctor then moves it around in small, continuous, circular motions to help the ultrasound waves penetrate deep into the tissues that need it.

Several factors will determine how your therapeutic ultrasound session will be structured, or how the ultrasound will be used. These may include the ultrasound’s frequency and intensity, the area of its application, and the duration of the procedure. Our doctors take great care in making sure that each patient’s needs are accounted for, and that each session that you will receive the most beneficial treatment for your specific injury.

What is therapeutic ultrasound used for?

Physical therapists or chiropractors may utilize therapeutic ultrasound to help with injuries from car crashes, work accidents, dislocations, sprains, and more. Most soft-tissue injuries within the body may be a candidate for ultrasound treatment,  such as ankle pain, neck pain, knee meniscus tears, low back pain, and rotator cuff tears.

You can also be a candidate for ultrasound therapy if you have chronic pain. Health experts believe that ultrasound waves can help enhance circulation and tissue extensibility. Ultimately, it leads to improved mobility and reduced pain.

Is therapeutic ultrasound right for me?

Although ultrasound might not work for everyone, it might be beneficial if you have chronic, persistent pain. A chiropractic or physical therapist that you trust, such as the doctors from Buffalo Chiropractic + Physical Therapy, can provide a personalized treatment plan for you.
