Chiropractic Care & E-Stimulation Treatment
Chiropractors dedicate their lives to helping others live healthier lives, and one of the roots of a healthy life is proper spine health. While chiropractors are trained in spinal adjustments, which is what most people associate with chiropractic care, chiropractic doctors are also trained in a few other types of specialty treatments. While of course making sure that our spines are in line, they also do take into account the muscles that are around them. This is why all of the chiropractors (and physical therapists!) at BC + PT are also trained in e-stimulation (e-stim, or electrical stimulation).
If you’ve sustained an injury, your chiropractor or physical therapist may use e-stim to assist in your recovery journey. If your muscles are accustomed to holding your bones in the wrong position, sometimes they can feel a little tender or sore after your chiropractor adjusts them back to their proper position. This is where electrical stimulation comes into play!
What Is E-Stim (E-Stimulation)?
Electrical stimulation primarily works by sending mild electrical pulses to your muscles, through your skin, to help stimulate your injured muscles or trick nerves to lessen pain. This action mimics the actions of your nervous system, and can boost the body’s natural process for responding to pain.
In an e-stim session, your chiropractor (or physical therapist) places e-stim electrodes, connected to the e-stim machine through small writes, on the skin. These electrodes administer impulses via your skin to initiate a muscle contraction, which can help alleviate chronic pain.
The way we use electrical stimulation varies for each patient depending on their individual condition. If we implement electrical stimulation to help treat your condition or injury, the doctors at BC + PT will walk you through the ins and outs of the procedure and what you can expect from your treatment. Although e-stimulation might not be used for everyone, many people can use this procedure to speed up recovery and relieve painful or unbearable symptoms.
